Introduction

We have taken a look at some the different types of glass available and some of the features and the benefits those features afford to your windows. In addition we have described some of the patterns and styles such as lead designs, coloured glass and obscured glass.

Specifications and Regulations

Double glazing can be classed by it's 'U value'. This is a measurement of the heat transfer through the glass. So the lower the U value the better it is at retaining heat. All new windows and replacements are subject to 'Document L' of the building regulations. This states that windows should not have a U value greater than 2 for u-PVC and timber windows and 2.2 for aluminium. Most companies are member of FENSA (Fenestration Self Assessment Scheme), which means that they can adopt a self assessment of the U value. The supplier is not a member or you are carrying out the work yourself then the local authority will have to check the double glazing.

Pilkington K Glass™

Pilkington K Glass™ is primarily used as the inside pane of a double glazing window or door. It has an energy saving coating which acts as a reflector of heat. This means that the heat is retained in the room rather than escaping as is the case with normal double glazing. Normal double glazing will allow heat to radiate from the inside pane across the air gap and onto the colder outside pane. Pilkington K has a special coating facing into the air gap which is known as a low emissivity coating. The benefits of this type of glass are fairly obvious in that they will make heating more effecient.

Lead Patterns

Adding lead to glass is a traditional way of adding decoration into a window design. There are literally hundreds of different patterns and designs available.
